house of leaves

Who has read House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski?  I highly recommend it. It is crazy and really amazing. It has a main story based on a ton of papers that some guy finds in an apartment he moved into that used to belong to a blind old man who was recently deceased. Then the footnotes contain their own story about the guy who finds the papers.  It also contains several other little “interviews” and “transcripts” from other characters who may or may not be related to the main story.

The main story deals with a family who discovers their house has larger dimensions inside than it does outside when they return from a vacation. At first, the difference is only an inch, but soon it expands on and on, creating a massive labyrinth structure inside. The outside remains unchanged.

The footnotes chronicle the life of the man reading the main story (which he found in his apartment.)  Then, as if that weren’t enough storylines, the end of the book contains an appendix of letters that the footnote character’s mother wrote him from her home in a mental hospital. They are also crazy.

It is truly a work of art. Even the layout of the book mirrors what is happening in the story.  There are many pages in a row containing just one word each, illustrating the great open spaces that appear inside the house.  Other chapters have words arranged in a tunnel-like fashion, making you burrow through pages that feel like a crawlspace.

Anyway, I seem to have misplaced the book so am unable to loan it out. Just go get it, it is incredible.
